Vermont’s local, public-sector solid waste agencies are actively working to improve the recycling rates while at the same time coping with the high costs of processing especially challenging products. As their lead state capitol advocates, we’ve enacted Product Stewardship Laws requiring manufacturers to cover the end of life disposal costs of these products now banned from landfills: mercury thermostats, compact fluorescent lamps, and electronic waste. In 2011, this team effort enacted the nation’s first law moving towards the comprehensive diversion of organics from the waste stream.
